Frequently Asked Questions

When is Connect Transit hiring bus operators?

Connect Transit is always accepting applications for Operators; our goal is to keep a steady stream of interested and qualified applicants who can be ready to meet a hiring demand.

Do I need to possess a CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) to become a Connect Transit Bus Operator?

Having a CDL is not a requirement for filling out an application.  Individuals who are extended an offer of employment will be required to have a CDL Permit with Air Brake and Passenger Endorsement before starting training.  Also note, if you already currently hold a Class A or Class B CDL but do not have an Air Brake Endorsement and/or a Passenger Endorsement, you must take both tests to receive both endorsements needed to drive a transit bus. You can pick up a CDL handbook at the DMV and there are several study guides available at www.cdltest.co (notice .co not .com).  The questions are not identical to what is on the Illinois test, but they are pretty close and will show you any areas that may need more work.

How can I obtain a CDL Permit?

After you are hired you will be required to obtain a CDL permit.  To obtain a CDL permit, you must pass three written tests.  Tests are administered by the Illinois Secretary of States' Office.  We encourage applicants seeking a CDL to obtain a copy of the CDL manual to study before taking the written tests.  You may pick up a manual from any Secretary of State’s Office.  To obtain a permit to plan to drive a transit bus you must pass three written tests:  A General Knowledge test, An Air Brakes Test, and A Passenger test.

What other qualifications are necessary to become a Bus Operator?

Most importantly is the ability to provide exceptional customer service.  We also require the ability to interact well with the general public.  An Illinois Class B CDL (or permit) with P endorsement will be required upon hire.  Other qualifications are demonstrated relevant employment history, good decision-making skills, and a keen sense of responsibility.  You must also possess the knowledge and ability to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and possess a high school education or its equivalent.  In addition, clean driving history and background check are required.  Good attendance is essential for a bus operator.

Are there physical requirements for being a Bus Operator?

To safely operate a commercial motor vehicle, you must be in good physical condition.  An Illinois DOT medical card is required to obtain a CDL for driving a transit bus.  Every commercial motor vehicle operator must be strong enough to drive his or her vehicle with ease.

Does Connect Transit provide CDL training?

Yes.  As part of the regular training program, trainees who begin employment with a CDL permit, or who begin employment with a Class A or Class B CDL and who need to add the required endorsements, will receive in-house training to prepare them for testing by the Illinois Secretary of State’s office.

How much can I expect to earn while in operator training?

You will receive the training bus operator rate of $18.20/hr.

Once I complete training will the hourly rate change?

Yes, based on service. The maximum hourly rate for bus operators is $30.34/hr.

How long is the training program?

The training program consists of 4-6 weeks of training and includes a combination of classroom, in-vehicle training, route training, and in-service training.  Training is paid.  A training day is typically 8 hours long.  Trainees must attend all scheduled training classes.

What hours would I work as a Bus Operator with Connect Transit?

A bus operator’s shift varies depending on the set schedule.  A bus operator can expect to work a split shift with hours in the morning, afternoon, and/or evening.  Shifts are picked based on seniority.  If hired you would be starting at the bottom of the seniority list, which means you would probably be scheduled to work a split shift and weekends or cover a shift.  The hours you may be asked to work will be; 5:45 AM to 3:00 AM, Monday through Sunday.

What types of benefits would I receive as a full-time Bus Operator?

Connect Transit provides a comprehensive benefits package that includes many employer-provided and voluntary benefits.  Including Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance.  Full-time employees also receive sick leave, vacation time, paid holidays.  Life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, and more!

Will I be required to join the union?

Yes.  All hourly positions are union positions and subject to contractual terms and seniority listings.

Will I be required to pay union dues?

Yes.  Union dues will be effective after the completion of your 90-day probationary period.
