POSITION SPECIFICATION: Bus Operator

 

REPORTS TO: Operations Supervisor(s), Operations Manager

 

FLSA: Non-Exempt, safety sensitive position

 

SUMMARY: Primary duties are to operate Connect Transit vehicles over an established route to deliver transportation services in a safe and timely manner to the Bloomington-Normal communities.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervise the “on route” training of new operators as directed by the Operations staff and the Safety/Training Department.

 

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following examples are not to be interpreted as an inclusive list; additional tasks may be assigned as needed to achieve the goals of the transit system.

  • Complete training, safety and development classes as provided by the Manager/Supervisor.
  • Safely Operate Transit vehicle in all types of weather and traffic conditions.
  • Safely Operate Transit vehicle in accordance to the printed schedules
  • Interact effectively with the public under varying circumstances.
  • Must be able to adhere to tight time schedules under varying conditions and still operate bus in a safe manner.
  • Comply with federal mandates as they related to assisting boarding and departing passengers with disabilities.
  • Comply with CFR Title 49 which states that operators will “announce at least transfer points along fixed routes, other major intersections and destination points, and intervals along a route sufficient to permit individuals with visual impairments or other disabilities to be oriented to their locations”.
  • Maintain, support, and promote a safe work environment while complying with all the Connect Transit safety rules, policies, and procedures;
  • Perform pre-trip and post trip inspections of assigned vehicle.
  • Ensure the proper collection and recording of fares.
  • Interact with Connect Transit passengers and staff in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Excellent attendance

Knowledge of:

  • DOT Regulations/requirements for position.
  • Regulations regarding safe practices, company procedures and government regulations regarding safety;

 

Ability to:

  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedural manuals.
  • Legibly write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Speak effectively before groups of customers or employees
  • Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other transit system departments, collective bargaining unit members, outside contractors, vendors and other government agencies;
  • Meet the physical strength, agility and dexterity requirements to perform the work of this position.

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Minimum, High School Diploma or general education degree (GED) and one to three months related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of educations and experience.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS: Possession of a valid Illinois Commercial Driver’s license with air brake and passenger endorsements.

 

PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES/DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee will be required to pass a DOT physical examination and drug screen. Work requires sufficient physical strength, agility, endurance, dexterity and hand-eye coordination to perform all essential duties; the employee must occasionally lift and/or move between 75-100 pounds.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment is representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

 

The employee will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to assorted fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals, and exposed to vibrations and risk of electrical shock. Work is performed indoors and outdoors. It involves exposure to normal risks typical to all aspects of transit system bus operations. It may involve exposure to angry and/or unpleasant individuals.
